In 2021, the CST Foundation granted over $160,000 to 33 community organizations that are making a difference in the lives of lower-income families across Canada. These organizations help children and youth obtain the necessary grades, skills and self-confidence to succeed in school.

One of those organizations – the Multicultural Association of Sussex in New Brunswick - is focused on supporting new immigrants in the Sussex area, providing services that meet the needs of the community, and promote harmony and social inclusion. One of their areas of focus is with newcomer youth in kindergarten to grade 12, helping create social connections to support their settlement and engagement into the community and foster a more positive school experience.

As a 2021 CST Learning Project grantee, Multicultural Association of Sussex implemented a 10-week program that introduces culture and diversity to youth through several activities all designed to enhance the social and educational experiences of newcomer and Canadian-born youth. A learning module was developed which can be easily modified to the age level of audience.  Furthermore, the Program Facilitator oversaw their Homework Helpers club and provided additional support to newcomer youth who were struggling to access regular programming.

“It was a very well organized and run activity. The children were fully engaged because of the set up and skill in leading and directing the activity" – Shirley-Ann Howe, CLASS Director

The project engaged more than 250 youth from the community of Sussex, ranging from kindergarten to grade 12.

“(Sam) was a guest speaker in three grade 8 classes and one grade 6 class. She did an activity with regards to diversity and inclusion. She had the kids completely engaged the whole time.  It was a pleasure to have her in my class. It is not always easy being a guest speaker in middle school but she handled the students very well.  Thanks so much to Multicultural Association of Sussex for providing this opportunity for my students.” - Mrs. Palmer, Sussex Middle School
